Most of us don't need state-of-the-art computers with the latest gadgets and gizmos - we spend our time using browsers, email programmes and word processing. Even a bit of spreadsheet action isn't going to challenge a computer that's a few years old. There's no need for an upgrade just to get a new screen, or a bit more hard disk space.

Even so, if you do have an old PC you might just find that increasing your RAM will speed things up a bit - files will open and save quicker and most programmes will respond to commands more quickly. You may also mean that you can upgrade to Windows 7, the latest version of Windows, which registered charities can get very cheaply though CTT.

Andy Fairhall is SCIP's Technical Support Manager:

"We were thinking about the effects of the cuts and realised that many people won't be able to afford to replace older computers. Adding more RAM is a cheap alternative to a full upgrade. It's the memory that the computer uses to actually run the programmes you use and newer, bigger chips can handle more operations at the same time. The cost depends on the computer you have and the how much is already installed, but we find our clients usually pay about £25.

"Although RAM isn't expensive this special offers makes it even cheaper to keep your old PC but still improve it's performance. Fitting the chips is fairly straightforward for most people - you need to be a bit brave when removing the old ones but most people could manage it. Otherwise you may be able to find a volunteer to do it, or we can do it for you for a small fee."

To find out how much RAM you have click on the Start button in the bottom left hand corner of the screen then right click either My Computer (XP) or Computer (Vista/Windows 7) and left click properties from the menu.  On XP machines your total RAM will be shown at the bottom of the system properties screen that appears.  On Windows 7 it is the information next to Installed Memory (RAM).

Or give us a call anytime and we'll help you work out whether our cheaper chips could speed up your PC.
